Last week we were joined for an evening visit by the 63rd Tornado Cub Pack from Tilehurst. They wanted to link a visit to the Vets with the work they had already done with their animal Care Badge
The evening started with the cubs all assembling in the waiting-room and being given a quick talk on the Surgery, the animals we see and what goes on. They were then introduced to some of the staff who were there to show them around and let them try a few planned activities.
The first activity was a guided tour which gave the Cubs and their leaders a view of all the different areas of the building, the kennel space, laboratory, operating theatres and the equipment available.
The cubs then had the chance to try their hand at bandaging techniques. Although soft to animals were provided for this, it was much more fun to bandage each other!
We had a veterinary quiz to try; this was an observation quiz as well as a test of their animal knowledge. This included find the flea, a word search and general animal knowledge.
The final activity was a chance to dress as a veterinary surgeon and have a go at scrubbing up in preparation for surgery. They also had a chance to look at some of the surgical instruments and the anaesthetic equipment.
The evening flew past and all the cubs seemed to have a good time doing the activities and asking the Castle staff lots of questions.
